Speak instead of type

Dictation Software for RSI and Typing Pain

If typing has become the part of your day you would rather avoid, Kokukeyboard lets you write with your voice instead. It is dictation software built around a single hotkey: press it, speak, press it again, and your words are typed at the cursor in whatever app you are using. People looking for dictation software for RSI or speech to text for typing pain usually want exactly that - fewer keystrokes, the same text. It runs offline on your own computer and costs one payment, not a monthly fee.

A hotkey and your voice replace the typing

The whole workflow is three steps. Press the hotkey - Ctrl+Shift+D by default. Say what you want to write: a sentence, a paragraph, a whole email. Press the hotkey again. A moment later the text appears where your cursor was, as if you had typed it yourself.

There is no separate dictation window to copy from and no clipboard step to remember. A long reply that would have been hundreds of keystrokes becomes one key combination at the start and one at the end. You can change the shortcut in Settings to any combination you find comfortable, including one you can reach with a single hand.

Because Kokukeyboard types at the level of the operating system, it is not tied to a particular program. Email, a word processor, a browser form, a chat window, a spreadsheet cell, a search box: if the window accepts typed text, the dictated words go into it. You do not need a different tool for each place you write.

Say the whole thought, then let it type

Kokukeyboard does not try to show your words live while you speak. It listens to the complete thought and transcribes it in one pass after you have finished, then types the result once. You are not watching a stream of half-guessed words and stopping to fix them mid-sentence with the keyboard. You speak at your own pace, pause when you need to think, and review the finished text when it lands.

Transcription is done by OpenAI's Whisper, a speech recognition model running locally on your own computer. It recognizes 90+ languages, so you can dictate in whichever language you are writing in.

No subscription, and it works offline

If you rely on dictation every day, a monthly fee becomes a permanent cost of writing. Kokukeyboard is $14.99 once, covering two computers - a desktop and a laptop, for example - with no recurring charge. The reason it can be sold once is simple: the speech recognition runs on your own hardware, so there is no server bill behind every minute you dictate. It is available for Windows and for macOS; Mac users can read about offline dictation for Mac.

That also means it works without the internet. After the Whisper model is downloaded during setup, dictation needs no connection, and no audio is ever uploaded anywhere. What you say stays on your computer, which matters if you are dictating private messages, work documents or anything else you would not want sent to a server.

What Kokukeyboard is, and what it is not

Kokukeyboard is a typing tool. It turns speech into text at your cursor, and that is all it claims to do. It is not a medical product and does not treat any condition. If you have pain when you type, talk to a qualified health professional about it; a dictation app can change how you write, but it is not a substitute for that advice.

The easiest way to find out whether voice typing fits your day is to use it for real work. The 14-day trial includes every feature, needs no card, and starts when you enter an email in the app. If you buy and it is not for you, there is a 30-day refund.
